Generation Y: chapter one
overview

Kathleen is taking a break from studying in the living room of her apartment. Eli's grandfather, who is visiting for a few hours for the first birthday party of Eli, is standing in the doorway.

Kathleen and Stéphane started to go out together one month after the birth of Stephane's son, Eli. His ex-girlfriend lets him take care of their child one weekend out of two.

To celebrate the 2008 New Year's Eve, Kathleen and Stéphane organized a huge wine and cheese tasting party. All their friends were invited via electronic mail. About 15 people came to the party which ended at 6AM.

Kathleen is working on her University research. For her second year at the University, she chose classes that were taught only in Montréal, 250km from Québec city. So she ended up travelling twice a week, by bus or car-pooling.

Kathleen and Stéphane started to go out together when they were 21 years-old. They met in a bar in a kind of akward situation where they had to simulate a phone number exchange in order to discourage a homosexual man who was coming on to Stéphane.

Feeling concerned about the food chain, Kathleen and Stéphane partnered with a co-operative that buys food baskets, partly organic, produced in the region and distributed monthly to its members. When they receive their baskets, they often have to cook during two or three days in a row in order to manage the large amount of fruits and vegetables acquired.

Kathleen is surfing the web on her laptop after lunch. Apart from her studies, Kathleen mainly uses her computer to communicate with her friends via instant messaging.

On their first Valentine's day, Kathleen (then 22 years-old) is taking a folic acid pill in order to prepare her body for pregnancy. Although she and Stéphane were thinking of having a baby three months later, she incidentally got pregnant the night before.

At the newly opened birthing centre in Québec city, a midwife is attempting to determine the position of the baby in Kathleen's belly. Kathleen chose to consult a midwife instead of an obstetrician during her pregnancy despite the fact that her mother did not approve her choice.

A friend is touching Kathleen's belly to feel the baby's kicks during the baby shower thrown for her on the last month of her pregnancy.

The baby shower thrown for Kathleen on the last month of her pregnancy ended in the bar next door at 3AM. Everyone had a lot to drink but Kathleen did not drink a single glass of alcohol.

Eli is seen with his grandmother during his second birthday party. Even though Stéphane's parents are divorced and do not talk to each other anymore, they reunited for the occasion.

Kathleen was nine months pregnant when she organized the second birthday party for her stepson Eli to which Stéphane's family and friends were invited.

Kathleen and Stéphane's child, Lorik, born in November 2008, was given Kathleen's last name in order to allow her family to have a male in their family tree.

Lorik, then two-days-old, is sleeping in the arms of Jessie, one of Kathleen's close friend, while Mathieu, Stéphane's younger brother, is paging through a magazine. In the beginning, so many people wanted to see the newborn that Kathleen and Stephane had to establish visiting hours in order to allow them to get some rest. At that time Stéphane was working full time with many night shifts.

Kathleen and Stephane, carrying Lorik in a baby sling under his coat, are waiting for the city bus. Because their income mainly comes from government financial programs, Kathleen and Stéphane can't afford to buy a car and usually take the city bus.

Despite the disapproval of her family and her boyfriend, Kathleen chose to breast feed her baby.

Since Kathleen chose to breast feed Lorik, Stéphane is left with the chores of changing diapers and doing the housework.

Stéphane is seen at the newly openened birthing centre in Québec city during a postnatal care appointment for his son Lorik. During all of Kathleen's pregnancy and during the six weeks of postnatal care, Stéphane has been present to every appointment that she had with her midwife.

Eli is playing with his dinosaur figurines by the window.
Living with a low income, Kathleen and Stéphane are renting an apartment owned by the SOMHAC, a non-profit organization which provides low cost housing, situated in one of the poorest district of the city.

Kathleen and Stéphane are seen at the Agriculture, Nutrition and Consumption Fair Week event with Eli and Lorik (in the stroller) where farming animals are displayed in cages.

Even though Kathleen and Stéphane do not know what their life will be like in the near future, they both want for themselves a house in the suburbs with a garden and a little farmyard. She wants to be a midwife and he wants to work in a school as a social worker; maybe part-time to spend more time home with the kids. They are still wondering how many kids they want, but they seem to agree on at least one more...
